Program Description

The Child Development program is designed as a career ladder with multiple entry and exit points, offering a certificate, an Associate of Applied Science, and a Bachelor of Applied Science in Child Development, all completable entirely online. The Bachelor of Applied Science in Child Development requires a total of 120 credit hours, and all students, regardless of their location, receive in-state tuition. Students will learn to plan, implement, and assess developmentally appropriate learning experiences for young children, using a strong understanding of child development to promote social, emotional, physical, and cognitive learning and growth. This program is a 2+2 degree program, meaning that students with an Associate Degree in Child Development or a related degree from an accredited college or university can begin working towards the Bachelor of Applied Science in Child Development at WVU Parkersburg.

  • Prerequisites: Student must hold at least a 2.0 grade point average. A grade of C or better in all CDEV and EDUC required coursework. The student must pass all required background checks and receive a “no conviction” statement from the Department of Health and Human Resources; waivers will not be granted. Student must also have no substantiated claims against them through Child Protective Services. Students must uphold the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct. Failure to adhere to the code may result in dismissal from the program. Students must have completed at least 48 hours toward the Associate of Applied Science in Child Development. Transfer students will be considered on an individual basis or according to agreements by institution.

Program Description

The Bachelor of Science in Early Child Care and Development prepares students to promote positive development for young children in a variety of work settings such as infant and toddler programs, childcare centers and homes, military child development/care centers, preschool programs, before and after school and Head Start programs. Students in the program are typically working professionals, advancement seekers and career changers and may be enrolled part- or full-time. The 120-hour bachelor’s degree program can be completed mostly online at your desired pace. Practicum experiences will require some in-person classroom observations and interactions. Courses are semester-based, and coursework must be completed to meet assignment deadlines. Students must complete general education courses (45 credit hours) and electives (24 credit hours) at OSU or another institution. To be eligible for the final 51 credit hours at OSU, students must apply and be admitted to the Early Child Care and Development program. A GPA of 2.5 or higher is required.
